1Carrington Research Extension Center, NDSU 2Hettinger Research Extension Center, NDSU The objective of this project was to evaluate corn processed by fi ne grinding or rolling or fed whole in relation to dietary forage level for fi nishing yearling steers. Results indicate when forage levels are greater than 15.5 percent on a dry-matter basis, dry rolling or fi nely grinding corn to maintain a particle size greater than 1.35 ± 0.16 millimeters (mm) and less than 5.49 ± 0.14 mm (2.84 ± 0.12 mm on average) will result in optimum feed effi ciency and dry-matter intake (DMI) for fi nishing yearling steers.

The effect of forage source and particle size on finishing yearling steer performance and ruminal metabolism.
Two finishing trials and a metabolism trial were conducted to evaluate the effect of forage source and particle size in dry-rolled corn finishing diets. In Exp. 1, 224 crossbred yearling steers (BW = 342+/-11 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design consisting of seven treatments. Treatments were an all-concentrate diet or diets containing equal NDF levels provided by alfalfa hay or ...

Crossbred yearling steers ( = 360; 395 ± 33.1 kg initial BW) were used to evaluate the effects of dry-rolled corn (DRC) particle size in diets containing 20% wet distiller's grains plus solubles on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and starch digestibility. Steers were used in a randomized complete block design and allocated to 36 pens (9 pens/treatment, with 10 animals/pen). Treatm...

Fifty-four individually-fed HerefordAngus cross steers (initial BW = 308 ± 9 kg) were used in an unbalanced randomized block design with a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement to determine effects of corn processing method and corn wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) inclusion in fi nishing diets on animal performance, carcass and beef characteristics, and sensory attributes. Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of cattle age and dietary forage level on the utilization of corn fed whole or ground to feedlot cattle. In Exp. 1, 16 steers were used to investigate the effects of cattle age and corn processing on diet digestibility. Two cattle age categories were evaluated (weanling [254 +/- 20 kg BW] and yearling [477 +/- 29 kg BW]; eight steers per...
